Psychotherapy for Adults

There are times in all our lives when our emotions feel overwhelming, leading to problems in our relationships and functioning effectively at work. Psychotherapy can help us to better understand ourselves and relationships, giving us the skills and insights to work through our difficulties.

The Milburn Psychology Practice provides thorough and thoughtful assessment and offers an effective range of treatments and approaches (from brief therapy to more intensive, longer-term or open-ended psychotherapy) for adults experiencing a wide range of emotional difficulties and mental health issues.

The practice offers treatment for the following conditions or circumstances:

• Depression, sadness, loneliness

• Grief and loss

• Anxiety, shyness,self-esteem, and panic

• Relationship difficulties

• Living with chronic illness and disability

• Trauma and abuse

• Parenting

• Infidelity, separation or divorce

• Sexual issues

• Life transitions

• Personal growth

• Career issues

• Managing major mental illness

Even if you do not see your particular condition or circumstance listed above, Dr Milburn encourages you to call to discuss your needs and goals for individual therapy. If he is not the best person to help with your situation he will always try to make an appropriate referral. However, if after the initial consultation it is agreed that further sessions would be helpful then Dr Milburn will meet with you once a week for fifty minutes in his consulting room. This confidential and consistent structure provides the opportunity to talk about what is worrying you.

At the heart of Psychotherapy is the recognition that our complex and often unconscious emotional life and relationships is a fundamental part of being human. Sometimes we do not understand the beliefs and fears that shape our way of looking at and living in the world, as they have become ingrained and automatic. We can find ourselves repeating destructive behaviours, feeling stuck in unhappy relationships and stunting our emotional, creative and professional development. Psychotherapy helps in developing the capacity to become more reflective and make choices that are more informed and free from automatic responses.
